You’ve likely noticed fewer Ohio Statehouse updates in recent weeks. That’s because Ohio’s Republican supermajority (like Republicans in Congress) decided to give themselves a lengthy Summer holiday so they could hit the campaign trail with candidates on the November ballot.
But now it’s looking like their break could be cut short.
As Ohioans are painfully aware, President Trump’s war with Iran has caused gas prices to hit historic highs this Summer, and Ohio’s prices have been some of the worst in the nation.
So yesterday afternoon, Dr. Amy Acton (Democratic candidate for Ohio governor), publicly called on lawmakers to pause Ohio’s gas tax.
A few hours after Dr. Acton’s statement, the Republican candidate for governor, Vivek Ramaswamy, announced that legislators will be returning to the Statehouse to pause the gas tax.
Now Republican talking heads around the state and country are praising Vivek for his leadership, trying to pretend this was his idea instead of Acton’s.
I hope you can feel me rolling my eyes as I type.
It’s still unclear whether or not Ohio legislators will actually return to session before Election Day. Many of them were apparently caught off guard by Vivek’s announcement….
And Vivek doesn’t actually have any power over the legislature….he’s currently just a random guy who used to do business in Ohio.
But Vivek’s running mate, Rob McColley, is the current Ohio Senate President. He’s likely the one trying to make it look like Vivek is already leading the state.
I wonder how President McColley’s colleagues feel about him promising to interrupt their Summer break for a political stunt….
No matter what, we’ll be watching Ohio’s legislative calendar and session schedule closely over the next few days.
This is so ridiculous. They tried voter suppression and failed and now Republicans are trying more overt moves to rig the midterms
