A bit of good news!
Governor DeWine has VETOED a bad bill from his fellow Republicans
Finally, some GOOD news!
Governor DeWine heard your calls and paid attention. He VETOED Ohio Republicans’ bill to weaken child labor laws!
SB 50 would have allowed 14 and 15 year-olds to work until 9:00 pm year-round, even on school nights.
What a freaking headline. It’s shameful that the state legislature passed this bill at all.
In fact, nearly every Republican legislator voted to expand the use of child labor in Ohio. Nearly all Democrats voted no.
You know I call out Democrats when they deserve it, but the two parties are NOT the same.
Politicians know how bad this bill is. There have only been a few (rather pathetic) attempts to defend it.
Senator Andrew Brenner, for example, claimed that SB 50 is about parents’ rights.
His argument is a wild slippery slope. If a parent wants their child to drop out at age 12 to work full-time, should that be their choice too?
In fact, why require school at all? Let’s just make it all optional. That way, rich kids can choose to get an education, and poor kids can “choose” to work full-time as soon as they can walk in order to feed their families!
Such a comment really makes you wonder how Senator Brenner was chosen to lead the Ohio Senate Education Committee…
It’s important to thank the governor (and his top staff) for this moment of common sense.
It’s also important to call out politicians who voted for this outrageous legislation.
Did your legislators vote to weaken Ohio’s child labor laws? Find out here.
If they voted YEA, they voted to expand the use of child labor in Ohio. They placed their corporate donors over children’s health and education.
If they voted NAY, they voted to support Ohio kids.

Feeling powerful? Time to channel it! We’ve got some more calls to make!
We need Governor DeWine to be decent a few more times. Tell the governor (and his top staff) to VETO these bills:
SB 293
Creates more provisional voters, cancels more voter registrations, AND rejects ballots that arrive after Election Day even if they were postmarked on time
These three property tax bills would devastate Ohio schools, libraries, addiction services, and first responders
These bills would NOT provide the targeted property tax relief our communities need
Never forget how much power there is in public outrage and public shame. Governor DeWine never liked SB 50, but he could have easily been pressured by his colleagues into signing it. Your calls, emails, and tweets matter.

This is definitely encouraging. He also announced some grants for pediatric cancer research.

Thank you so much for what you do!
